To plant, cut holes in the plastic with a sharp knife or bulb planter. The holes should be in the center of the plastic film and just large enough to plant the seeds or transplants.

  • 2  fresh Cantaloupes - ripe
  • 1/4 pound Prosciutto di Parma

Cut cantaloupes into halves. Scoop out and discard seeds.
Then cut into slices,  gently remove skins from each slice. 
Transfer melon slices to a large serving platter.


Lay one or two slices of prosciutto on top of each slice.
Serve immediately or set platter aside in a cool place, 1 hour before serving.

Japanese-sweet-melon

Saturday evening, I brought home an estimated $600 worth of Japanese melons.  How, might you ask, did I come across these melons?  And why, exactly, would I purchase them?  

The good news is, I am not off my rocker.  I did not actually spend $600 on six melons.  I only spent PHP 6000 (about $140) for two tickets to the Consular Corps of Manila winter ball.  Greg wore the same tux as he wore to the Marine Corps Ball last month, and my dress was only $60, so we're at a max expenditure for the evening of $200.  A bit pricey, for sure, but that included an open bar, a delicious dinner at the Shangri-La Makati, and two raffle tickets.

The Consular Corps Ball is famous for its raffle prizes.  This year's three grand prizes were two different four day cruises and a pair of round trip business class tickets to San Francisco.  Personally, I would also have been happy with either of the Boracay vacation packages - or two nights in El Nido, one of the top resorts here.  In addition to donated prizes, the Consul of each Embassy traditionally donates a raffle prize from his (yes, they were all men this year) country.**  For example, the Austrian Consul donated a Swaroski crystal vase.  Can you tell where this is going?

You guessed it!  Each year, true to form, the Japanese Consul donates some sort of uber expensive fruit.   This year, he donated two boxes of Shizuoka melons, flown in fresh that day from Japan, in the compartment of the plane and not the cargo hold, because the cold would ruin the sweetness.  The heydays of the Japanese bubble economy have not completely disappeared, it seems.  

Two years ago, my coworker won Fuji apples.  Last year, Patch's classmate's dad won melons.  For the last month, I've been talking about these melons.  After all, I figured, even if we didn't win a grand vacation, there's always the melons.  All the while quietly reminding myself that I never even won a cakewalk at my grandparents' church summer fair -- only Beth ever did.

Imagine my surprise when the first number called out was:  2 -- 8 -- 4!  My number (or maybe Greg's, but I was holding both tickets, so I'm saying it was mine).  The melons were mine!  Six sweet melons, so sweet I could smell them sitting on the table about four feet below my nose.  I even busted out a little Japanese chit chat when accepting my prize (to my amazement, no Telugu slipped out).  The Japanese Consul seemed pleased with this and told me he was glad the melons were going to someone who would truly appreciate them. 

When the evening ended, a fellow guest offered me a gift certificate to TGIFridays in exchange for a melon.  Greg, disliking melons of all varieties, wanted to take him up on it, but I refused.  Get your hands off my melons!

I spent Sunday periodically hunting around for information on these famously expensive melons.  I found a great YouTube clip - an 8 minute Japanese TV special on Shizuoka melons - that explains it all.  The melons had to be finished by today  (a mere three days after receiving them), so I brought three into the office, warning my coworkers it would be 80 PHP / bite.  Everyone agreed they were sweet and juicy and perhaps the best melon ever tasted, but, still, it's a melon.  And one slice is about what a local employee spends on a week's worth of lunch!

Knowing I couldn't finish two melons this evening, I divided the last one in thirds between our three helpers.  Greg, in his sarcastic tone, told them (as they were walking out the door) that he'd deduct it from their pay check this month.  The poor ladies stopped short and starred at him - until he reassured them he was joking.  Guess his sarcasm doesn't quite translate!

Melon & Mint Salad – Shutterbean

While growing up, I could always count on seeing a bright yellow plastic melon baller nestled in the back corner of my mom’s kitchen utensil drawer. It stood out among countless wine openers, toothpicks, random metal skewers and an egg slicer. That melon baller couldn’t help but look pitiful & needy from lack of use. Whenever we bought a melon (which was almost never)  that melon baller would come out and I’d be overly excited to use it. Precursor to my adulthood? A month ago I was helping my mom clean out some of her kitchen drawers and she offered up the infamous yellow melon baller. It was almost as if she was daring me to use it. I gladly accepted the challenge and when I flipped through the Heart of the Artichoke cookbook, low and behold I found a recipe that required melon balling action!

Melon & Mint Salad

I’d like to say that my melon balling went swimmingly; it did not. I was under the impression that a melon baller will give you perfectly round spheres of fruit. I was mistaken. After I hacked up half of the cantaloupe, I walked up to my computer and immediately started watching melon balling videos on youtube (they totally exist!).  What I gathered is that you can’t make a perfect melon ball; one edge is almost always slightly messed up, flat or has shreds of melon meat hanging off of it. If you have enough melon balls to cover a dish and present the nice round sides up to the world, no one will be the wiser. Top the half perfect melon balls with with cut mint leaves and generously squeeze lime juice on top and you have a fancy salad. After you take your first bite of juicy sweet melon with the lime & mint, you’ll forget about imperfections. You’ll marvel at how perfectly balanced the salad is and you’ll feel like you’ve satisfied your sweet tooth while cleansing your palette. This salad is the perfect end to a delicious meal.

What have we learned here today? A melon baller that doesn’t get used is a very sad melon baller indeed. Bust out your melon baller, it needs you!

Serves 6-8

  • 1 small cantaloupe
  • 1 small honeydew melon
  • 1 lime, halved
  • handful mint leaves

Cut the melons in half, remove seeds and make melon balls with a melon baller. If you don’t have a melon baller (sad face!), you can cut the melon into bite sized-chunks. Put melon balls in a serving dish and refrigerate until cold. Just before serving, squeeze fresh lime juice over the melon & toss. Cut the mint leaves into slivers and scatter over the melons, tossing lightly.

New fruits and veggies look good, taste great | Seattle WA ...

FROM A CURIOUS new Italian green touted by chef Jamie Oliver to a zucchini diminutive enough to grow in a pot, today’s vegetables aren’t your grandma’s beans and corn.

Many of the newest varieties are as handy for landscaping as they are in the kitchen. How about pink pumpkins, or lettuces sufficiently ruffled and variously colored to star in beds and borders as well as salad bowls? If you plant plentifully, you can have your garden and eat it, too.

• The long, slim foliage of Agretti ‘Roscana’ is popular in Italy for its slightly bitter taste. The bush itself, which you’d never guess is related to beets and spinach, looks like a big bunch of chives. Cut the green tops and they’ll regrow to cut again. Eaten raw, agretti is crunchy and salty. You can braise these greens in olive oil and garlic, or steam before tossing with lemon and olive oil. Jamie Oliver says on his website that the taste is “spinachy and minerally” — in a good way.

• Cross a pumpkin and a butternut squash and what do you get? A squashkin, of course (S. ‘Autumn Crown’), which is shaped like a pumpkin and has a sweet melon scent. It produces early and bears heavily; the fruit stores well, too. Also new this spring is a very small and rare winter squash from France called ‘Potimarron’ with flesh that tastes strongly like chestnuts.

• You’d expect a pink pumpkin to look very, very wrong, but ‘Porcelain Doll’ is as pretty as its name. Inside, this exotic fruit is a deep orange, sweet-flavored, and ideal for pies and soup.

• Nothing is as tempting in spring as tomatoes, and two new ones are sure to stir summer fever. ‘Berkeley Tie Dye’ is an indeterminate type (meaning, the vine kind that continues to grow through the season) that grows 4 to 6 feet and needs a sturdy cage or trellis. The texture is creamy, the flavor sweet-tart with hints of spice; 80 to 90 days from transplant.

• The ebony-splashed tomato ‘Indigo Rose,’ also an indeterminate type, is a powerhouse of antioxidants. Bred at Oregon State University, it performs well in our climate. The fruits are only 2 to 3 inches and look as rich as a plum when sliced open. ‘Indigo Rose’ is tasty in salads, but also good for snacking and canning (75 days from transplant).

• If you’re more into growing from seed than transplants, new varieties from Renee’s Garden Seeds tantalize with the tagline “Set the Table from Your Garden.” The edible landscape lettuce ‘Stardom Mix’ is as useful in the garden as it is tasty on the table. It features two oakleaf lettuces, one bright emerald green, one deep burgundy, with crispy-sweet leaves that are fast-growing and heat-tolerant. ‘Stardust’ is as effective and easy-to-grow in borders as it is in raised beds or vegetable gardens.

• “Renee’s Beet and Chard Braising Mix” is nutrient-dense, yet the green-and-red-leafed beets, mixed with silver- and gold-leaf chards, are robustly pretty. Cut the leaves young and tender for salad, or let them bulk up for braising or sautéing.

• No more baseball-bat-sized zucchinis with the new French bush variety of summer squash. The vines don’t ramble because ‘Astia’ was bred for small gardens and containers. The fruits grow at the base of the plant where they’re easy to harvest; pick them when they’re about 5 inches long and the plant will keep bearing.

The squashes, tomatoes, pumpkin and agretti are produced by Log House Plants in Cottage Grove, Ore., and can be found as starts in area nurseries; the seeds are available in nurseries and by mail order from Renee’s Garden www.reneesgarden.com.

growing on the swan slough: Transplanting sweet peppers

The last sunny day we had around here I was able to transplant my 'little bell' sweet red pepper starts out to the greenhouse. I was waiting for the weather to warm up just a tad more (especially night time tempertatures), since peppers need some more heat than tomatoes to thrive. They're now all nestled into the greenhouse amongst the tomatoes.

All I have left in regards to starts growing on my windows are some 'Five Acre Farm' melon seeds I saved last summer after enjoying one of their melons at the farmers market. I guess they are an heirloom seed passed on to them from a Grandmother: a small, cantaloupe-like melon with a pale green shell with black speckles. I remember they almost looked like large eggs. I plan to let the melons snake around the ground of the greenhouse, whereas I'll have my tomatoes and peppers supported vertically with twine. My theory is that the melon plants will act as a living mulch, keeping the soil's moisture level up during the heat of the summer. It's amazing how hot it can get in my greenhouse on a sunny day...especially since I don't heat it. I had to open the window recently because my greenhouse themometer read 100 degrees!
